The engine is out (Yanmar 2GM20F). Now we’re just trying to clean it up a bit, starting with the inside of the engine. I was advised by my knowledgeable friend Kevin (in Richmond, VA) to try pouring something called Varsol through the engine to clean the “gunk”. As it turns out, Varsol does not seem to be available anymore. A little Googling and it looks like Varsol is mostly a mixture of mineral spirits (yep, paint thinner) and diesel. So I poured this mixture into the top of the engine while Adam turned the motor slowly by hand. The oil pan is off. We used big foil roasting pans to catch the junk as it rinsed through.
After wiping most of the “gunk” off by hand AND a thorough rinse-through with our home made Varsol, things look a bit cleaner:
The oil pan is now spotless too 🙂
Still lots of work to do, but that’s all for now.
